Rodents

Rodents - pose a significant economic and public health hazard.  Rats and mice are responsible for the spread of many diseases through their bites and by contamination of human food with urine or feces.

Rodents also spread diseases indirectly through their ectoparasites.  As the vector and often the reservoir of disease, the rat and related rodents have become major pests. The three most important commensal or domestic rodents, the Norway rat, the roof rat and the house mouse.

Diseases that rodents can spread directly and indirectly are Plague, Murine typhus, Rat bite fever, Salmonellosis, Leptospirosis, Trichinosis, and Hemorrhagic fever.  The prevention of unnecessary pesticides can be accomplished through effective sanitation standards, rodent exclusion methods, prevention of developing food and harborage sources, surveillance, and notification of appropriate organizations when rodents or structural problems are identified.
